Many customers say 'I want high-temperature resistant cables,' but 'high-temperature resistant' is a vague term—80°C is considered high temperature, and 200°C is also considered high temperature, but the material selection is completely different.
The temperature rating of a cable is determined by the insulation and sheath materials:
70-90°C: Regular PVC, internal wiring of ordinary equipment
105°C: Heat-resistant PVC, motor wiring, lighting fixtures
125-150°C: Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), EPR, industrial equipment, motor leads
180°C: Silicone rubber, high-temperature environment, heating equipment
200-260°C: Fluoroplastics (FEP/PFA/PTFE), electric heating elements, metallurgy, aviation
When selecting a type, you also need to distinguish between 'ambient temperature' and 'conductor temperature rise': the conductor will heat up when the cable is carrying current, and the temperature rating must cover the 'ambient temperature plus temperature rise'; otherwise, insulation aging will accelerate during long-term operation, and the service life will drastically decrease. For example, if the ambient temperature is 100°C and the temperature rise due to current is 30°C, you need to choose a 150°C rating, not 125°C.
Another easily overlooked factor is **short-term overload**: in operating conditions such as motor stall or frequent start-stop cycles, the instantaneous temperature rise may be much higher than the rated value. When selecting, sufficient margin should be allowed or materials with strong short-term overload capacity (such as silicone rubber) should be chosen.
