Specific Requirements for Drag Chain Cables Across Industries

Published: 2025-08-21 14:21:49

Due to differences in work environments, equipment operation characteristics, and other factors, different industries have varying specific requirements for drag chain cables. The following are some common industry situations:

Industrial Automation and Precision Manufacturing:

Bending performance: Frequent bending and movement are required, so the cable must have high flexibility and a long bending lifespan. For example, cables at robotic arm joints usually need to withstand more than 5 million bending cycles, and some high-speed drag chain systems even require reaching over 10 million cycles.

Accuracy assurance: For CNC machining equipment, cable signal transmission must be stable to ensure positioning accuracy. For example, cables in machining centers must have a positioning accuracy error of ≤0.01mm, which requires good shielding performance. Tin-plated copper wire braiding (coverage ≥ 85%) and aluminum foil wrapping double-layer shielding can be used.

Wear and corrosion resistance: Automated production lines may contain oil stains, cutting fluids, etc. Cable sheaths need to be oil- and wear-resistant, generally using polyurethane (PUR) or modified thermoplastic elastomers (TPE).

Logistics and warehousing:

Tensile performance: In intelligent warehousing systems, drag chain cables used for sorting robots, automated guided vehicles, and other equipment need to withstand a certain amount of tensile force. The tensile strength can be increased to ≥200N/mm² by adding layers of polyester yarn or Kevlar fiber braid between the conductor and the sheath.

Wear resistance: Due to the frequent movement of the equipment, the cable surface is prone to wear. For example, a certain e-commerce logistics center uses TPE-sheath cables, whose surface corrugated design can reduce mechanical wear by 60%.

Environmental Adaptability: Some logistics equipment may operate outdoors or in different temperature environments. The cables need to have a certain temperature tolerance, such as -40°C to 125°C, and also be resistant to ultraviolet radiation.

Automobile Manufacturing:

Oil and chemical resistance: In automotive production lines, there are various oils, emulsified cutting fluids, etc. The sheath material of drag chain cables needs to undergo special modifications, such as adding fluorocarbon resin (PTFE micropowder) and hydrogenated nitrile rubber (HNBR) particles, to ensure excellent oil resistance. In the ASTM D471 standard test, the volume expansion rate is ≤10%.

Bending life: Drag chain cables in automotive manufacturing equipment need to be bent frequently, with a bending radius usually ≤ 7.5D (D is the cable outer diameter), and the dynamic bending life must exceed 8 million times.

Shielding performance: For signal transmission cables in automotive electronic control systems, good shielding performance is required to prevent signal interference and ensure the normal operation of automotive electronic devices.

Food and beverages:

Hygiene compliance: Cable sheath materials must meet food-grade standards, ensuring that they do not contaminate food.

Corrosion resistance: In the food processing process, it may come into contact with various cleaning agents, disinfectants, etc., and the cable must be able to withstand the corrosion of these chemicals.

Wear resistance: The frequent movement and friction of the equipment require the cable to have good wear resistance, and materials such as wear-resistant polyurethane can be chosen for the sheath.

Medical:

Biocompatibility: Drag chain cables used in medical imaging equipment, surgical robots, and the like must have materials with good biocompatibility and should not cause adverse reactions in human tissues.

Hygiene requirements: The cables need to be waterproof and dustproof, meeting the hygiene standards of medical devices, such as complying with ISO 14644-1 Class 5 cleanroom standards, and should be easy to clean and disinfect.

High flexibility and reliability: Medical equipment requires high motion precision, and cables need to have high flexibility to maintain stable electrical performance during frequent bending and movement, ensuring the normal operation of the equipment and the safety of patients.

Chemical Engineering:

Corrosion Resistance: The chemical industry involves a large number of corrosive substances such as acids, alkalis, salt spray, and solvents. The sheath and insulation layers of drag chain cables need to use materials with excellent chemical corrosion resistance, such as polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and chlorosulfonated polyethylene (CSM), to withstand chemical erosion.

Temperature resistance: In some chemical production processes, the temperature is relatively high or low, and cables must be able to operate stably over a wide temperature range. For example, PTFE materials can work from -200℃ to 260℃.

Shielding and Safety: In some situations involving the production of hazardous chemicals, the cable's shielding performance must be good to prevent signal interference from causing safety accidents, and it may also need to have safety features such as flame retardancy.
